Austrade recently wrote a report (https://bit.ly/AUSTR) on the demands of institutions in Japan, one of them being better qualified TESOL trainers. Japanese schools and institutions require better qualified people these days, and an ASQA (https://asqa.gov.au) accredited TESOL qualification is an excellent start to improving ESL teaching in Japan and Southeast Asia.
＊＊＊Be aware that many so called international TEFL courses may have no credibility and may only be recognised by a limited number of institutions directly connected to the TEFL provider offering the non-accredited course. Some TEFL operators are now offering 6 Day 120 Hour TEFL Courses in Japan and SE Asia, as you would expect, these are not accredited by any government body.＊＊＊

Every LTI student receives online access to over 700 pages of course materials. These materials include a 400 page, 22 chapter E-Textbook titled “TESOL Made Practical For All Situations”, which has been specially written to provide the content of the course.
All students are also given access to the LTI TOSS – TESOL Online Student System.
・There are 9 core units that are common to both the Cert IV and Dip TESOL.
・One elective is chosen from 7 electives for completion of the Cert IV and 5 additional units are completed for the Diploma.
・ All units are studied online before starting your practical placement in Japan or Thailand. You can also complete your practical placement online.
All students are required to have a genuine Practice Teaching Experience which involves both observation of experienced teachers and actual classroom teaching.
・All training and assessment is done by Australian Government accredited TESOL Trainers and Assessors.
・Online seminars and tutorials each month.

Timeframes for courses:
＊ For the Cert IV: 12 month full-time, 18 months part-time..
＊ For the Diploma of TESOL: 18 months full-time, 24 months part-time.
・Some people like to finish in 3-6 months, while other people take longer due to work commitments.
About the workbooks:
・Each workbook takes between 50-120 hours to complete, depending on the competence and experience of the TESOL trainee. If you have been a teacher for many years, you can complete some units in under 50 hours. For those with no experience, it is recommended to take 100-150 hours per unit.
・Many of our students are either working or studying full time, so spend an average of 30M-1HR a day on TESOL workbook exercises.
There are English language ability requirements to undertake either of the courses offered. Evidence of English proficiency [LLN] include:
·Secondary School transcripts showing a pass level or higher at the completion of Australian senior secondary school (Year 12) or a very high level at the completion of junior secondary school (Year 10)
·Completion of a Certificate III or higher level Course in the Australian Qualification Framework (this must have been studied / completed in English)
·Enrollment in other courses of study requiring equivalent or above levels of English ability (for example a University Bachelor Degree)
·10695NAT – Certificate IV in TESOL LLN Entry Requirements
Entrants should have an English proficiency notionally equivalent to a minimum IELTS score of 5.5.
·10688NAT – Diploma of TESOL LLN Entry Requirements
Entrants should have an English proficiency notionally equivalent to a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.

TESCIE001 – Create a Culturally Inclusive Learning Environment (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to deal with the relationships between culture and ESL learning. It addresses the impact these dynamics have on the ESL classroom, and applications within ESL teaching.
TESGAE001 – Use the Genre Approach to Teach English (120 Hours)
Description: This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyze the functional nature of the English language. It provides knowledge of the language choices that are associated with a variety of social or functional purposes. In addition, this unit also provides basic knowledge of TESOL methodology and the application to specific learning goals.
TESTEG001 – Teach English Grammar (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to address specific aspects of English grammar. It addresses the practical techniques required to familiarize ESL students with a variety of grammatical concepts.
TESTSP001 – Teach Spelling and Pronunciation (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to understand the sound-spelling relationships in English. It addresses the techniques required to teach spelling and pronunciation.
TESTSE001 – Teach Speaking (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to understand the functional nature of language use. It addresses the skills required to plan and deliver a speaking lesson which incorporates practical techniques required to for developing the spoken English skills of ESL learners.
TESTLE001 – Teach Listening (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to listen to a range of texts. It addresses the skills required to plan and deliver a listening lesson which incorporates practical techniques required to develop listening skills and strategies.
TESTRE001 – Teach Reading (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to read a range of authentic or published texts for specific social purposes. It also gives the skills to plan reading lessons with practical techniques for developing those skills.
TESTWE001 – Teach Writing (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake analysis of written texts. It addresses the practical techniques required to plan lessons that will develop writing skills for specific genres.
TESDRF001 – Develop Resource Files (50 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to develop a file of resources. It addresses the practical techniques required to organize materials and/or resources around grammar points, topics, levels and communicative functions.

Cert IV students will choose one of a number of electives:
TESECL001 – Teach ESL to Early Childhood Learners (50 Hours)
This unit will teach you the skills and knowledge required to work with early childhood learners. These learners would typically be aged up to approximately 5 years old.
TESPSL001 – Teach ESL to Primary School-Aged Learners (50 Hours)
Description: This unit teaches the necessary skills and knowledge required to work with primary school aged children. These learners would typically be aged from about 5 to 12 years old.
TESTAL001 – Teach ESL to Teenage Learners (50 Hours)
Description: Through completion of this unit you will gain the skills and knowledge required to work with teenage learners. These learners would typically be aged from around 13 to 19 years old.
TESMAD001 – Use Music, Art and Drama in TESOL (50 Hours)
Description: This unit will assist you in developing the skills and knowledge required to incorporate music, art and drama into the ESL classroom. (This unit has a prac teaching component)
TESTEC001 – Use Technology to Assist ESL Learning (50 Hours)
Description: This unit will address the skills and knowledge required to use a variety of communication technologies as an integral part of some ESL learning activities. You will learn the practical techniques required to teach some basic computer literacy, develop a portfolio of internet sites, computer software designed for ESL learning and other technology based activities which can contribute to the learning process. (This unit has a prac teaching component)
TESWWV001 – Work with Volunteers in ESL Contexts (50 Hours)
Description: Through completion of this unit you will gain the skills and knowledge required to work with volunteer workers in ESL programs. You will learn the practical techniques required to recruit, train, monitor and support volunteers. (This unit has a practical research task)
TESCEC001 – Establish Community Based English Classes (50 Hours)
Description: This unit will give you the skills and knowledge required to set up and coordinate community-based ESL programs. You will learn the practical techniques required to set up an ESL class outside of formal learning institutions. (This unit has a practical research task)
Diploma in TESOL students will go on to study the following units:
TESAEL001 – Assess ESL Learning (150 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to select appropriate assessment methods and develop appropriate assessment tools. It addresses the practical techniques required to evaluate learning in an ESL context.
TESAMT001 – Apply Approaches and Methods in TESOL (150 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of various TESOL methodologies and to select and apply appropriate methodologies in response to different learning needs and situations.
TESDTS001 – Design and Teach ESL Syllabus (150 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan a series of lessons for a group ESL learning environment. It addresses the practical techniques required to plan ESL teaching.
TESESP001 – Teach English for Specific Purposes (150 Hours)
Description: This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to successfully study in a variety of specific English language contexts, and activities for developing those skills. It addresses the practical techniques required to break down tasks involving language and to identify aspects of language that will need development in order to complete the task successfully.
TTESEAP001 – Teach English for Academic Purposes (150 Hours)
Description: This unit is designed to help trainees prepare for teaching English for academic purposes. It focuses on the range of language skills necessary for successful studies in academic contexts, and activities for developing those skills. It also applies the approach to breaking down tasks involving language (introduced in Language Analysis), to identify aspects of language that will need development in order to complete a task successfully.
PRACTICAL PLACEMENT – As part of the Nationally Accredited Diploma of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours practical placement, which involves observation and a minimum of 10 hours of practice teaching. Students can do more than 10 hours of supervised teaching and less observation, providing that a combined total of 20 hours is achieved.
Only after completing all units and the practical placement will you receive your qualification.
Japan has some rules and regulations about working in school, some of which are based on physical appearance:
1. No visible tattoos.
2. No long or big earrings (for females).
3. No earrings for men.
4. No unkept hair.
5. No beards.
6. Business attire only is allowed at schools, no casual wear whatsoever.
7. Business shoes must be kept clean and polished.
